Representation of women in music video
Women in the music industry are usually represented as slim
women who wear often very revealing clothing that goes with there very sexual
dance routines. Both the artists and the record labels want to be seen in a
certain light so they are able to sell more. The way they think that this is
done is by having attractive women who are are trying to attract the male gaze.
Beyonce is a world wide name know because of the success she
has had through destiny's child and through her solo career. Beyonce's 2011
song Run the world (girls) was not a storming success but didn't do that badly
either. Beyonce's rule the world is an example of a music video where the
lyrics mean one thing and the video is showing almost the complete opposite.
The lyrics are all about the power women have in the would and how women are
almost in control of everything including men. However the video give a very
different impression, by the fact the way the women 'take on' the men was by
wearing raunchy clothing and at times using quite sexual dancing. What I
thought was funny was the only two people who were on the females side who were
not wearing revealing clothing would be the two back up dance who were both
men. The video unlike the lyrics is more showing how men are in charge and how
women are more looking for the male gaze. This is very much undermining the
lyrics and what they are trying to say.
Another video I looked at was Benny Benassi's Satisfaction.
Benny Banassi is an Italian DJ and record producer. He is very well known in
place such as Italy and Spain. His is best known for his 2002 summer hit Satisfaction. The original music video was of
and almost still picture of the band with a lot of graphic throughout the
video. Then the record label gave it a new video in order for more people to
want to see it. The new music video solely contains thin women in bikini's
using power tools while swaying their hips into the camera. The whole video is
aimed at men and attracting that male gaze. At times it boarders on being
funny!! However the video also sends across the message to all young women who
see it that the key to success is the be jumping and dancing around in
bikini's. This could have a major influence on how these women dress and act
later on in life.

First media post!
Hi this is my media blog. Over the year I will be blogging about my Media Studies. At this point I am looking forward to looking more closely at films. One of my favorite movies is The Shawshank Redemption here is the trailer. I also quite like the Family Guy spinoff, as seen here.
